Ballast Park

The sea and seafaring have always been the lifeblood of Rauma.

The park is planted with ballast plant species found in Satakunta Province. Ballast was waste soil that was placed in sailing ships in order to provide weight and hence stability.

Ballast often contained plant seeds, sometimes from remote ports. When the waste soil was discharged at port areas, species could sprout from it, which were previously unknown in Finland.

The Ballast Park was founded to provide a place for the ballast plants in connection with the Maritime Museum, as the harbour area was developed.

The Park is the outcome of the cooperation between many organizations in Rauma. Funding for the construction was received from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Satakunta Regional Fund, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
